Remember that Clay work that I did whenever ago (t Remember that Clay work that I did whenever ago (that’s Covid-19) for you. Well here is part of the result. An activity kit for pupils and students that learn in the Jewellery Quarter. Without doubt one of the best things I have done during lockdown. #JQmakes contains activities based on the rich heritage of #RegentsPlaceJQ in the Jewellery Quarter. @jqth_project commissioned myself along with @tinafrancistapestry and @frillyind to create the kit. I delivered kits to both @jqa_live and @centralacademycreativearts this week. The response has been great! 😁 We still have one more school to deliver to, which will happen in due course. Some of the activities will be on the Townscape Heritage website soon for you to do at home. Keep your eyes 👀 peeled for that. ☺️ Almost forgot I created a cardboard gemstone 💎 and have included some of the stages in this post. 😉

Almost forgot! My mush....😂 this mask has been Almost forgot! My mush....😂 this mask has been worn and washed twice. It’s my original sample. No nose wire in this one. You can tie it at the back of your head or around ears for if you want to put it on quickly with pre tied ties. The heavier the fabric, the more structured it becomes. I’m out of this weight, but have a lighter one on order. It looks brilliant made up. Hopefully it should come in time for next week Sundays drop. 😉
.
Remember first drop will be on tomorrow’s stories. ☺️

The big reveal.....☺️ those little numbers fro The big reveal.....☺️ those little numbers from yesterday are markers for each mask/facial covering that I make. I decided to number each one as 20% of the full sale price will be donated to @project18brum the not for profit programme that I started last year to enable young people to design, make and sell textile/leather based products. I thought it would be a good way to keep track of how many I sell and for the recipient to feel that there purchase has supported others. It doesn’t really matter what number you get... it’s just a little personal touch.

Not sure what number I will get to but I plan on using a lot of my fabric stock(I don’t have much it’s mainly leather these days) to make these non surgical masks. My good old industrial flatbed is being used once more.... it’s been a few years, but I have absolutely loved been on it.

The face mask is modelled on a surgical mask, it has two fabric layers with an additional pocket for a filter if you choose to add one plus a wire strip for your nose for a more comfortable fit. All yours for £12.50 plus a £2.50 flat fee for postage. Every Sunday will be ‘mask drop’ day - available stock for that week with postage/delivery the following Monday/Tuesday.
Free delivery to B1, B2, B3, B4 and B18. .
.
First ‘drop’ this Sunday...😉 just holla via DM or deborettecreative@gmail.com once the drop has taken place. All drops will be on stories at some point on Sunday and I will post my mush wearing one tomorrow. 😬😂

So this weeks design challenge #6 is trousers or s So this weeks design challenge #6 is trousers or skirt. Taking inspiration from the 70’s, 90’s, 00’s- design either a pair of trousers or skirt for the 2020’s. I’m hanging in with leather as the chosen material, as leather garments during these fashion decades was hot! .

Go to for research of course is the internet- but a lot of the time the internet will throw up some images that you think are from that decade... but they are not. Good old books are the go to on this one. Another perfect source of information are old family photos. There will be some beauties there..😂 there always is.
.
I made the mood boards for a year 9 project at my school. Some of the students designed and created outfits from the 50’s-00’s as a celebratory fashion show for the schools 50th anniversary. It took me absolutely ages to make 6 A2 boards of images from each decade. It was well worth it though as the show was amazing and without doubt one of the best things I have done at any school. The students, staff, families, friends and visitors to the shows loved it. .
So decide what your going to design- your material is leather- did I say leather is hot for 2020! Just realised the first image should say for the 20’s. 😬😂
.
This will be the last challenge for now as I’m going to focus on some making and navigate how I can ‘teach’ in our current climate. If you have been taking part in the design challenges and want to continue designing, I’m happy to give you feedback on any work that you have done or continue to do. Just email me on deborettecreative@gmail.com 😉

I just spent ages writing this post and not one wo I just spent ages writing this post and not one word posted.🤔 So I’m going to make this one shorter... clearly I was trying to explain too much. So based on some work I received from a student this week- Ive decided to do a #showandtell this bodice was part of an outfit that I made for a fashion competition when I was a second year student on my fashion course. The theme was resourcing and I decided to look at elements of African culture such as pattern, scarification and colour. I became a semi finalist and had to make my outfit for the fashion show at the Royal Albert Hall✨. It was the first time I had worked on a stand(mannequin), body(real person), leather clothing and walking foot machine. Four new firsts😬... from memory I made two toiles( prototypes) and remember fitting the first toile one to a fellow student and the look/feel just not been right. Working on a ‘real’ body is very different to a solid one. 😂
.
I became a finalist of resourcing and was really happy with my achievement. When my outfit returned I asked my flat mates girlfriend if she would model for me and I styled, shot and developed the B/W photo. The last image is the design. This outfit is one of the best things I made whilst studying.
.
So now over to you- let’s do some show and tell. It can be something you made last week, years ago or whilst you were at school. I think from fabric or leather as it’s my specialism. Use the #showandtelllockdown @deborettecreative share on stories and I will share- be brave, it won’t be visible for long.😉

So this weeks design challenge #5 is a coat or jac So this weeks design challenge #5 is a coat or jacket. Let’s face it we all feel like we are living in a movie right now, hence the theme of #dystopian or #utopian. Loads of designers use films for research and inspiration. The remakes may make interesting viewing due to the advancement of CGI, but you just can’t beat an old classic.
.
I haven’t mentioned materials yet in any of the challenges so for this one you have two choices- leather as per Max in Mad Max/ Roy Batty in Blade Runner or Canvas and corduroy per Rick Deckard in Blade Runner.
.
I had to throw in The Matrix and Black Panther for inspiration too. It was all coats in the Matrix and body suits/armour in Black Panther with the latter being about a Utopian world it just had to be done- plus I loved the costumes. You can create a jacket idea from a body suit. ☺️
.
Do sketches as flats... simple line drawings, not forgetting fastenings and pockets. We all need pockets. Today’s tip - if you have a fine liner or felt tip in the house, flat drawings look great with a black outline. So to sum that up - a jacket or a coat in either leather or Canvas/Corduroy taking inspiration from a dystopian or utopian movie.
.
I would create a theme board for this one and or watch some movies. 😉

I’m back with working hands..... it’s been a w I’m back with working hands..... it’s been a while. So this week for me has been all about clay... air dry clay. Rewind to last year and I would have finished delivering creative sessions to year 7/8 for Spotlight on the Street. A heritage project led by @jqth_project where local makers work with students celebrating the rich trades and heritage of the Jewellery Quarter. The project was due to run once more but due to possible lockdown it had to take another shape. Myself along with @tinafrancistapestry and @frillyind are creating the best craft kit ever for students from three local schools ‘Jewellery Quarter Makes’. The kit is looking 👌🏽 and I know if I was one of those lucky students receiving one, I would be really made up. .
In case your wondering why flowers, an animal that you can’t quite see and another shape that looks like a horse shoe? Well the focus this year was Regent Place which is a quiet street tucked away between Vittoria St and Caroline St. Like a lot of the Quarter it was home to a variety of JQ trades but also had a garden and stables. Beyond the flower image are some images of working hands from sessions last year using air dry clay. Air dry clay is brilliant for entry level modelling which as it states doesn’t need a kiln or oven. If you have young ones at home - give it a go, you may find you yourself battling for the packet. 😉
